The French Constitutional rejects again a referendum on the pension reform

The proposal wanted to bring to a citizen vote the proposal to raise the minimum retirement age in France, from 62 to 64 years.

The French Constitutional Council has rejected the request for the pension reform be put to a referendum. This change was intended to bring to a citizen vote the intention of raise the minimum retirement age from 62 to 64.

The parliamentary left has once again failed in the attempt to get the Constitutional Court to validate an initiative to hold a referendum that would have set the retirement age at 62 years. Experts in the matter point out that in order to carry out such a consultation, a mandatory reform of the Constitution must be promoted. In this case, it would not be a reform. Since the age is still maintained at 62 years.

Second try

It is not the first time that the highest administrative court has rejected the request for consultation. Since, on April 14, he already rejected the proposal of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Regarding the first request, the creation of a new tax related to the financing of pensions had been added. This had been done with the hope that, this time, he would be admitted.

But, despite the fact that this second petition had been signed by 253 deputies and senators, it has backed down again.
