The free shipments of fertilizers were the first in Mexico to be distributed to small farmers in the state of Jalisco as part of the government’s Fertilizers for Well-being program, Prensa Latina reported May 4.
The Minister of Agriculture of Mexico, Víctor Villalobos, announced the start of the supply of fertilizers. The official said that the shipments are made to increase the production of corn and key crops necessary for Mexico’s food security.
The government will support more than 42,000 farmers in Jalisco with more than 24,000 tons of fertilizer through the Fertilizers for Well-being program, the minister said.
The implementation of the program will require a lot of effort on the part of the Mexican government, since this year it involves the direct and free delivery of one million tons of fertilizer throughout the country. This is expected to benefit two million farmers and cover three million hectares of arable land.
Recall that the sanctions of Western countries against Russia caused a significant increase in the cost of fertilizers around the world, which exacerbated the food crisis in many countries.
