The United States has updated the guidelines for Philippine military support in the South China Sea. The corresponding document was published on May 4, according to Reuters.
The six-page “Bilateral Defense Guidelines” were a response to Philippine leader Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s desire to update the Mutual Defense Treaty with the United States.
These guidelines were the first since the treaty was signed in 1951.
The document refers to the provision of support if either party is specifically attacked in the South China Sea. The document also reflected modern types of warfare.
“Recognizing that threats can arise in multiple domains, including land, sea, air, space and cyberspace, and take the form of asymmetric, hybrid and irregular warfare and gray area tactics, the guidelines chart a path towards greater interoperability in both conventional systems and non-traditional areas”the Pentagon said in a statement.
The document itself was agreed on May 3 in Washington after Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s meetings with US President Joe Biden, as well as US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin.
