Haiti’s ambassador to the United States, Bocchit Edmond, was relieved of his post on suspicion of corruption, Haitian Foreign Minister Jean Victor Geneus said on May 3, according to Prensa Latina.
The Foreign Ministry confirmed that it decided to call the diplomat to Port-au-Prince after a message from Washington, which contained reproaches against his representation and leadership.
The United States accused Edmond of violating the Vienna Convention on International Relations and creating a system of corruption in the issuance of passports.
Local media reported that the former foreign minister during the presidency of Jovenel Moise (2017-2021) issued passports to people hiding from the law, giving them the opportunity to find asylum in Haiti.
The Edmond-led embassy was also harassed last March for managing passport funds, problematic contracts, including lobbying.
Geneus said that inspections and audits were carried out in the consulates and called for sanctions for confirmed cases of corruption that cast a shadow over the foreign relations of the Caribbean country.
Please note that Edmond is a diplomat with 30 years of experience. He has served in Jamaica, Panama, the United Kingdom, and Colombia, and has also been Haiti’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States from 2012 to 2014, Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2020, and since 2019. He has also served as tourism minister.
