The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, confirmed General Marcos António Amaru dos Santos as the new Minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI) to replace Lula’s former collaborator, General Gonçalves Diaz, who was fired on May 3 , ANSA Latina news agency reported.
The appointment of the general at the head of the GSI represents a defeat for the wing of ministers and advisers to the head of state who advocate the demilitarization of the government and a greater role for the federal police and public security agents, the newspaper said.
Let us remember that Díaz was dismissed after the publication on CNN Brazil of a video from surveillance cameras of the Brazilian government residence – the Planalto Palace during the so-called “assault” on the building by supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on 8 from January
Then thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed three government buildings in the ministerial quarter of the Brazilian capital. The current Brazilian government prefers to classify this provocation as an attempted coup. The cameras showed that Gonçalves Diaz calmly watched the protesters occupying government buildings and did nothing.
