The Lisbon Chamber will create a contingency plan for work mobility

The Lisbon City Council will develop a contingency plan to respond to the impact on mobility caused by works carried out in the city, it was announced this Thursday.

The creation of the plan is linked to a proposal submitted by the Block de Esquerda and unanimously approved on Wednesday at a meeting of the city council.

At stake, as the statement of the proposal, which Lusa’s agency had access to, explains, are “major traffic restrictions” resulting from the work on the general drainage plan and the expansion of the Metropolitano de Lisboa network.

The proposal says that both the drainage plan and the work in the Metropolitano de Lisbon involve the assembly of shipyards, which will have a “significant impact on the roads, which already have a huge flow of traffic, congested daily.”

In this sense, the blocker proposal protects the implementation of a contingency plan that is being developed with transport operators and parish councils to mitigate these impacts.

“The contingency plan should strengthen the public transport offer in the hardest hit areas and develop alternative routes to mitigate the impact on vehicular traffic through the use of public transport,” the proposal says.

It also proposes to take into account the use of active mobility alternatives, namely bike lanes and pedestrian areas, and create an “effective and comprehensive communication plan that” points citizens to traffic restrictions and public transport alternatives.

Traffic has been restricted from 26 April indefinitely in the coastal area and Baixa de Lisboa due to various works, with the City Council proposing alternatives for traffic from Alcantara to Parque das Naços.

In order to divert traffic away from restricted areas, the Council proposes to use the “5th ring road” for crossing, the route that starts from Alcantara – Avenida Infante Santo – Estrela – Avenida Alvarez Cabral – Rato – Via Alexandra Herculano – Conde Redondo. – Avenida Almirante Reis – Praça do Chile – Rua Morais Soares – Praça Paiva Couceiro – Avenida Mouzinho de Albuquerque – Parque das Nações.

Among the works that will cause restrictions are the expansion of the Lisbon metro, the implementation of the Drainage Plan to avoid flooding in the capital, the restoration of the sewer network and the repair of roads.
