Safety of genetically modified (GM) soybeans developed by Shandong Shunfeng Biotechnology Co. Ltd., confirmed by China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, reported online publication World Grain on May 3.
Soybeans contain two altered genes that provide a higher oleic acid content. The certificate was issued on April 21 for five years.
Shunfeng claims to be the first company in China to commercialize GM crops. 20 more GM crops are in the process of being introduced, including high-yield rice, wheat, and corn; herbicide resistant rice, soybeans and lettuce rich in vitamin C.
Additional steps are needed before Chinese farmers can grow GM soybeans, including variety registration.
The American company Calyxt has also developed high oleic acid soybeans. This soybean variety is approved in the United States in 2019.
