The decision to send Chinese Vice President Han Zheng to Charles III’s coronation indicates China’s disdain for Britain, Lord Patten, Britain’s former governor of Hong Kong, said on May 4, writes The Independent.
According to Patten, China’s election does not happen, as Zheng is responsible for human rights violations in Hong Kong and Xinjiang.
“It gives an idea of what the Chinese Communist Party really thinks of us because while he may or may not have been a major figure in Xi Jinping’s court, he was actually the guy in charge of Hong Kong politics.”– said the British politician, describing such a decision as an intention to poke a “stick in the eye” for the Hong Kongers who left China.
“After all, there are 1.4 billion of them and they decided to send a guy who is responsible for breaking his word on Hong Kong.”Patten emphasized. “If it wasn’t intentional, then it shows how careless they are to us anyway.”added.
In the UK, they believe China breached its obligations when it took Hong Kong back under its jurisdiction. In the 1984 Sino-British Declaration, China pledged to uphold a high degree of autonomy for Hong Kong’s rights and freedoms. It was about coexistence on the principle of “one country, two systems.”
According to Patten, the UK government takes a pragmatic stance towards China and seeks to ignore the problems of human rights violations. Patten said the UK should take a more active stance on this issue.
