The main effects of the US blockade on the health of Cubans were addressed by the Cuban Minister of Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda, and the CDH Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, Alena Dujan. This was reported on May 4 by the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Republic.
The head of the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic pointed out that the health sector is one of the most affected by the blockade against Cuba by Washington. This is due to the inability to buy medicines.
The Minister emphasized the difficulty of obtaining medical equipment in which more than 10% of the components are manufactured in the United States.
He mentioned the pressure from Washington on international banks. This undermines the sustainability of the Cuban health system, in particular, makes it difficult to modernize medical equipment.
José Ángel Portal recalled that during the spread of COVID-19, the financial blockade prevented donations from reaching the Island and the process of preparing Cuban vaccines.
United Nations (UN) spokesman Doohan arrived in Cuba on May 3 at the invitation of the University of Havana to host an Academic Dialogue on the impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights in Cuba the following day.
As part of his program, Dukhan will hold an exchange of opinions with the authorities and representatives of Cuban institutions on the consequences of the blockade for the Cuban people.
