The Netherlands wants to show active and independent participation in matters of cooperation in the field of security and defense of the EU, said Dutch Defense Minister Kaisa Ollongren, the Euractiv news website wrote on May 4.
“European dream, European promise. To protect this ideal, the Netherlands wants to lead the deepening of the EU’s security and defense policy.”Ollongren said in his speech in Maastricht, which was mainly devoted to the issue of the EU’s strategic autonomy in the field of security.
According to the minister, in recent decades security and defense cooperation has lagged behind, while NATO is beginning to gain new importance due to the situation on the eastern flank.
Ollongren proposed several concrete measures to strengthen Europe’s self-reliance, including strengthening the European defense industry. “to help Ukraine”joint arms purchases within the EU and the extension of European cooperation on an operational basis.
He also called for Europe to play a bigger role on NATO’s eastern flank, as well as maintaining cooperation with Britain, which “is and remains a military superpower”.
