The call, made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a rare state visit to the Netherlands, inquired about the memory of Ukrainian soldiers on Holocaust and World War II Memorial Day in the kingdom, The Times of Israel reported on May 5th.
“When today, as always, on the fourth of May, at eight o’clock in the evening, you will honor the memory of all those whose lives were taken by wars, the Great Patriotic War and others, remember the Ukrainians too.”Zelensky said.
According to the publication, this request and other statements by the Ukrainian leader compare Ukraine to the Allied forces of World War II in the hope that this may be more related to a foreign audience.
The author of The Times of Israel is sure that in the Netherlands this message resonated with an audience open to Zelensky. But amid mounting Western fatigue from the protracted conflict, it has also failed a wide range of other politicians who have opposed juxtaposing national memory.
For example, Zelensky’s speech drew criticism from both the anti-Islamic Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders, who boycotted the speech, and from Muslim Arnod van Dorn, a member of The Hague city council.
“On the day we honor the memory of the victims of the war, Zelly comes to ask for more weapons. This clown is greeted as a hero”van Dorn wrote on Twitter.
The publication mentioned that some critics noted the fact that in modern Ukraine, even under Zelensky, streets and monuments are named after Nazi collaborators, whom many Ukrainians consider patriotic only because they fought with the Red Army.
“This is a direct provocation to receive the President of Ukraine on May 4, under whose leadership Stepan Bandera became a national hero”— economist Gerrit Zeilemaker wrote on Twitter, referring to the leader of the insurgent militia who fought alongside Nazi soldiers.
Recall that during World War II, Bandera led the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation), whose fighters killed thousands of Jews and Poles, including women and children, who were fighting alongside Nazi Germany.
