It was proposed to create the Ministry of Evaporite and Lithium Resources in Bolivia. The Bolivian government sent the corresponding bill to the parliament of the multinational state, reports the Argentine information portal Infobae on May 5.
The Bolivian authorities propose a “direct tax on lithium” through royalties, which will be 10% if the price of a ton of lithium carbonate is $10,000 and will increase to 20% if the price of a ton of lithium is $30,000.
The United States Geological Survey estimates that there are 21 million tons of lithium reserves in Bolivia’s salt lakes.
These salt flats cover areas in the departments of Potosí and Oruro, where in 1990 the government at the time managed to cancel the contract for the development of lithium, which it had just signed with the US company North American Lithco Corporation.
