Kalmyk environmentalists carried out a comprehensive expedition to collect materials for the regional Red Book, the press service of the directorate of specially protected natural areas of the republic reported on May 5.
The first expedition this year was attended by employees of the Kalmyk State University, the Chernye Zemlya nature reserve, the Kalmyk Ministry of Natural Resources and the directorate of protected areas of the republic. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Kalmykia took over the organization and provision.
The purpose of the expedition was to study rare and endangered species of flora and fauna recommended for inclusion in the second edition of the Red Book of Kalmykia. The investigation was carried out in the southeastern part of the republic, the length of the route was about 980 km.
Scientists managed to collect information about many species of plants and animals from the Red Book. In addition, a unique white-tailed eagle nesting site was found in the Yuzhny State Nature Reserve. In total, no more than 5 cases of nesting are known in Kalmykia, this rare species is listed in the Red Book of Russia, with the exception of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain.
“The first step has been taken to determine the list of animals and plants of the republic that need special protection and care. Based on the results of this and subsequent expeditions, by the end of 2023, materials will be published for public discussion and the elaboration of a regulatory legal act that legally approves the protection of rare species at the regional level”, the directorate of protected areas noted.
