In Chicago, police stations have been turned into makeshift migrant shelters, where asylum seekers are given expired rations and infection and contagion are a common problem, Fox 32 reported May 2.
The outgoing mayor of Chicago —a city declared by the Democrats as a sanctuary city from which they will not be deported and where they will accept all who love this immigrant— Laurie Lightfoot accused the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, of sending immigrants to Chicago and other sanctuary cities. in response to President Joe Biden’s border policy.
In an open letter, Lightfoot told Abbott that his administration knew he planned to resume immigrant bus services to Chicago and other cities in May, noting that 8,000 people had already been sent to Chicago since August.
“Almost all of the migrants were in dire need of food, water and clothing, with many requiring extensive medical attention.she wrote. — Some of the people you put on the buses were women in labor and some were victims of sexual abuse. None of these urgent needs were met in Texas.”
But with cash running out and limited places in Chicago shelters, immigrants sent here have slept and dined in police buildings in recent weeks.
Rations delivered to Gresham County in late April for migrants expired in September 2020, and a notice was sent out urging police to return all expired food items, the station said.
One of the police officers pointed out that expired products are common to them. He said that “even during COVID…they gave us hand sanitizer that expired two years ago”.
John Catanzara, president of the police union, said bedbugs were “an ongoing problem.” There is also a head lice problem in one county and cases of chickenpox in another county, Catanzara said. He said it was “indecent” to use police buildings and resources to house immigrants.
A city council source said hospitals, hotels and short-term rentals have refused to accept asylum seekers because they view the crisis as a public health issue, putting city officials in a difficult position.
The mayor’s top advisers warned city council members that Chicago does not have the money, space or time to deal with the crisis, and Lightfoot recently warned the City Council that the situation is likely to worsen as the ability to send immigrants back under the guise of COVID expires.
“With the current practice of organizations in border states buying plane tickets and sending new arrivals to Chicago and New York, we are preparing for an even bigger increase.”wrote the mayor.
Some of the migrants stayed in police stations without beds for a week, saying some residents have opened up their houses to allow people to shower or wash clothes while they wait for the police to arrive.
A police source complained to reporters that the police received “zero help” from the city and had to personally support those in need. He recalled sending an employee to fetch food for a group of immigrants and personally buying baby wipes and diapers after his lot began to fill up in recent weeks.
Remember that it was the Democratic Party and the authorities of the cities of refuge who most ardently supported the policy of open borders for migrants. And suddenly it turns out that they have nowhere to put these migrants.
