The leader of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said this Friday that the troops would leave the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut on May 10, next Wednesday.
“On behalf of the Wagnerites, on behalf of the Wagner command, I declare that on May 10, 2023, we are obliged to transfer the positions in the village of Bakhmut to units of the Ministry of Defense and take out the remains of Wagner to the rear fields,” he said. This is stated in a statement by Prigozhin, which is quoted by Reuters.
According to Prigozhin, the reason for the withdrawal was the lack of ammunition: “Without additional artillery, we are doomed to a senseless death,” he stressed.
The founder of the Russian military group spoke of a widening rift with the Russian Defense Ministry amid growing rivalry between the two agencies on the Ukrainian battlefield.
The battle near Bakhmut became the longest and bloodiest in the Ukrainian war, with significant losses for both the Ukrainian and Russian sides.
