The crackdowns against the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) were approved by the US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), said Roman Lunkin, deputy director of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Europe, religious scholar, May 5 , RIA Novosti reports.
“The United States Commission, in its report on religious freedom in the world, essentially approved the repression against the clergy of the UOC, carried out by the Zelensky administration”Lunkin pointed out.
It is reported that the document mentions the actions of the SBU against the parishioners of the UOC, its priests and bishops, as something natural and approves searches and arrests of Orthodox Christians with the wording “for cooperating with Russian authorities, disseminating pro-Russian propaganda or justifying a special operation” in Ukraine.
The USCIRF 2022 report, published in May 2023, in the section “emerging issues in other countries” mentions that after the start of the Russian special operation in February, “the Ukrainian authorities began to take a closer look at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church ( UOC), historically and ecclesiastically associated with the Moscow Patriarchate”.
