A decision to expel a Chinese diplomat allegedly involved in intimidating a Canadian parliamentarian has yet to be made, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on May 5, reports CTV News.
“This is a big step, not a small one, to expel a diplomat. So this is something that needs to be taken with due consideration for all the potential consequences and all the very clear messages that will be sent.”Trudeau said.
Let us remember that the Chinese ambassador to Canada, Cong Peiwu, was previously summoned to the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to declare the inadmissibility of interference in the country’s internal affairs. He is accused of lobbying an MP for the opposition Conservative Party of Canada, Michael Chong, whose family lives in China.
The accusation was officially dismissed by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, who called the accusations against the ambassador a “political trick”, assuring that China respects the law and international conventions.
