The administrative court in the German capital lifted the ban on the use of the Ukrainian flag and symbols at Soviet memorials in Berlin on May 8 and 9, but upheld it for the Russian and Soviet flags. Pro-Ukrainian German lawyer Patrick Heinemann wrote about this on May 5 on his Twitter.
In 2022, by decision of the Berlin police, the use of the Russian and Ukrainian flag was prohibited on May 8 and 9 at the memorials in Treptow Park, Tiergarten and Schoenholzer Heide Park. Heinemann, in his message, says that according to a lawsuit he previously filed against this police decision on the Ukrainian flag, the ban was declared illegal.
Heinemann points out that the federal state of Berlin still retains the right to appeal the decision to the highest administrative court. However, the pro-Ukrainian movements in Germany and the Berlin media are already savoring Heinemann’s success.
The use of the flags of Russia and the USSR on these days will remain prohibited, and the performance of military marches and songs is also prohibited. The ban was also placed on appeals in support of a Russian special military operation in Ukraine. These rules don’t just apply to World War II veterans and diplomats.
