The Iraqi government is trying to repeat the mediation experience between Tehran and Riyadh regarding Tehran and Cairo, the Mehr news agency reported May 5, citing the New Arab.
Two Iraqi sources told the New Arab news site that representatives from Iran and Egypt met in Baghdad last month. It is observed that the level of the delegations was low.
The Iraqi authorities intend to use the mediation experience between Tehran and Riyadh to improve relations between Tehran and Cairo. Iraqi sources report that the Iranian and Egyptian sides insisted that news of this meeting should not be made public.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hossein and Iraqi National Security Adviser Qassim al-Araji attended the meeting, the sources say.
An Iraqi diplomatic source said Iran and Egypt responded positively to Iraq’s mediation. However, it is too early to talk about progress in mediation.
Note that Iran and Egypt severed diplomatic relations after the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979. Periodically there were attempts to mend them. However, there were no serious advances in its normalization.
