The Malaysian federal government intends to allocate additional funds to a light rail infrastructure (LRT) project to speed up its construction in Penang state, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on May 6, according to Malay Mail.
He added that the previous federal government did not allocate enough funds for this direction in recent years. According to the Prime Minister, this was especially true in the case of infrastructure in Penang.
“Yesterday I had a discussion with the Transport Minister and I will also have a discussion with the state government in the next one to two weeks to find a suitable approach to cover the high construction costs of the LRT.”he said.
The LRT project is one of the major components of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) and is a long-term strategy to overcome the problem of traffic congestion in the state.
The Penang government’s plan to build the LRT line is to connect Bayan Lepas and Komtar.
Meanwhile, Transport Secretary Anton Locke, when asked to comment on the announcement, said the federal government had made the decision in principle to proceed with the LRT project in Penang.
