The leader of the UK anti-monarchy group was detained by police as part of a group of six on their way to the site of a protest ahead of the king’s coronation, Sky News reports on May 6.
Meanwhile, a group from the Republic Movement was on its way to the designated protest site in Trafalgar Square.
Police refused to say why the protesters were detained. A group of six people are reported to have been arrested, including the leader of the movement, Graham Smith.
Republican activist Luke Whiting, 26, said: “Six members of the Republic Movement, including the chief executive, were arrested when the demonstration began on the edge of Trafalgar Square. It is not clear why, perhaps it was because one of them had a megaphone. It is not clear if the police are using or abusing these new powers to stop the protest.”
On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police announced that there would be “extremely low threshold” for protests during coronation celebrations, and what protesters can expect “quick action”.
