Thousands of members of the National Police and the Civil Guard demonstrated on May 6 in Madrid demanding equal pay with the regional security forces and “decent” old-age pensions, according to the Spanish Radio and Television Corporation (RTVE). ).
The protest was organized by the Jusapol and Jupol and Jucil unions, bringing together 80 thousand people. The demonstrators demanded “justice in wages” and carried banners with slogans such as: “Let’s protect what is ours”
The president of Jusapol, Miguel Gómez, demanded a “real and complete” equalization of the salaries of the national police and civil guards with those of the regional police. He pointed out that the amount of the pension amounts to €1,000.
“They (regional police) will be able to retire six years before us, at 59, without losing purchasing power, with a maximum pension. We have been here for six years and we lose more than 1,000 euros a month. We have many reasons to keep fighting.”– Gómez explained the reason for the protests by the National Police and the Civil Guard.
He also assured that “there is no dialogue with the government” when seeking a solution to this situation.
For his part, the general secretary of Jupol, Aarón Rivero, has indicated that all regional police officers are recognized as employees of a risky profession, while the National Police and the Civil Guard, who carry out the same work, do not have such status. .
