US citizen Peter Schwartz, 49, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for participating in the riots on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, by DC Federal Court Judge Amit P. Mehta, The Post Millennial reported on May 6th.
According to the New York Times, this is the most severe punishment imposed on the defendant in the case on January 6. Prior to Schwartz’s sentencing, Thomas Webster’s 10-year sentence for assaulting a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon was his longest. Webster was charged with waving a metal flagpole at a police officer.
The prosecutor in the Schwartz case asked the judge to impose a 24-year sentence. The judge ruled that 14 years were guaranteed because the defendant committed violent crimes and showed no remorse for his actions. Judge Mehta said: “Few people have appeared before this court with criminal records like yours.”.
A Pennsylvania man has been charged with assaulting police officers with a chair and a chemical spray. Schwartz was charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of obstructing the work of law enforcement officers during a civil disturbance and one count of obstructing the certification of an election result.
Prosecutors said he told others in text messages that he threw “the first chair at the police” and “started a riot.” Prosecutors also said he stole and used his own pepper spray and other chemical munitions on police officers after they were left behind.
The verdict came on the same day the prosecutor recommended a 25-year prison sentence for Oathkeeper leader Stuart Rhodes, who was convicted in November of sedition, obstruction of official proceedings and falsifying documents and proceedings.
Schwartz’s sentencing came the day after four members of the Proud Boys were also convicted of sedition for their part in the riots. At the same time, one of the convicts was not in Washington on January 6.
The US Department of Justice has filed more than 1,000 indictments in the incidents that took place on January 6, 2021.
Remember that in cities as liberal as Portland and Seattle, you can even throw Molotov cocktails at the police with impunity if you protest in defense of black people. Then not only will they not be sentenced to 14 years, but they will not even open a case.
