On Monday, Volodymyr Zelensky marked Victory Day by comparing Russia to Nazi Germany and accusing Putin’s forces of trying to “enslave and destroy Ukraine” as Hitler’s troops did in World War II.
“As Evil invaded our villages and cities then, so it is now. As our people were slaughtered then, so it is now. And all the evil that Russia brought back to our country will be defeated, just as Nazism was defeated,” assured the Ukrainian leader, who signed the decree on celebrating Victory Day on May 8, like the rest of Europe, in yet another break with the Soviet legacy.
On May 9, Ukraine will celebrate Europe Day, a date that will be marked in Kyiv on Tuesday by the visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
