The European Parliament (EP) decided on Tuesday that it will urgently discuss a European Commission proposal that would allow the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) to be used for investment in ammunition production.
MEPs approved the discussion of the Ammunition Support Act (ASAP) by 518 votes to 59, with 31 abstentions.
Thus, the European Parliament will be able to discuss the proposal at the next plenary session from May 31 to June 1 in Brussels, and MEPs, in principle, will be able to vote on it in July.
ASAP was presented by the European Commission on May 3 and proposes an immediate allocation of 500 million euros to modernize the factories for the production of artillery ammunition that already exist in the Member States.
The mechanism will also allow for the first time the use of PRR and cohesion funds for investment in this sector.
The Brussels proposal is part of a joint effort by member states to secure supplies of ammunition to Ukraine, which has been trying to repel a Russian invasion for more than a year.
At the same time, 27 members of the community bloc are working to jointly purchase 155mm ammunition, which is used by Ukrainian artillery, and supply one million ammunition over the next 12 months.
To this end, the European Union (EU) has already allocated more than one billion euros from the European Peace Fund.
The EU strategy follows the military invasion launched by the Russian Federation last February 24, which plunged Europe into what is considered the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
