This Wednesday, the President of Angola defended “direct talks” between Russia and Ukraine, between Russia and the United States, and between Russia and NATO to end the war in Ukraine and preserve world peace.
“The war in Ukraine, which has been going on for more than a year, risks taking on proportions that increasingly threaten peace and security around the world, so everything must be done to prevent the escalation of the conflict,” Joao Lourenço said in the city of Menongue. , Angolan province of Cuando Cubango.
According to the President of Angola, “a dialogue between Russia and Ukraine is needed to establish a ceasefire that paves the way for negotiations on a final peace, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine must be respected, as enshrined in International Law and the Charter of the United Nations, which we all must comply.”
João Lourenço recalled that Angola was defending itself against the aggression of the South African apartheid army, “but when it came to peace negotiations, it had to be done with the participation of other states, through negotiations and the signing of quadripartite agreements in New York.”
Accordingly, he noted, “we support not only the need to establish direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, between Russia and the United States, but also between Russia and NATO to ensure a lasting peace not only for Ukraine, but also for Europe and the world.” “.
“Thus avoiding a dangerous nuclear confrontation,” he stressed, speaking at the opening of a meeting of Angolan military leaders taking place in this southern province of Angola.
Speaking as Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), João Louresu also mentioned that the moment is “decisive” to start taking “concrete steps” in finding solutions to achieve peace (in Ukraine) “by business”. “.
“So that we don’t regret it later,” also considering that this is “the right time” to take concrete steps to bring about “necessary reforms” at the UN Security Council, the IMF, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization.
The head of the Angolan state, who chaired the meeting of the Angolan military leaders, has been in Cuando Cubango since Tuesday, where he watched the military exercises of the three branches of the FAA.
These maneuvers “took place in the month of May, in the year of the celebration of the victory of mankind over Nazism, which claimed the lives of 50 million people, including the Jewish people, victims of the Holocaust,” he recalled.
“Despite important achievements, today’s world is still not as safe as we would like, dangerous phenomena continue to arise in the world, such as the threat of nuclear confrontation, international terrorism,” he stressed.
According to him, unconstitutional seizure of power, aggressive wars, invasion, occupation and annexation of parts of the territories of sovereign countries and mercenaries in the service of states also threaten world security.
He also noted in his speech that the world is “watching with great attention and concern” tensions on the Korean Peninsula, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel region in Africa, in the east of the DRC, in Mozambique and in the Horn of Africa.
“We are calling on the warring parties in Sudan to establish a ceasefire to negotiate a final peace that will end a war that has claimed hundreds of lives in just a few days, has created thousands of internally displaced persons and refugees in neighboring countries,” João Lourenço further defended.
The meeting of FAA military leaders is held under the motto “We strengthen the Armed Forces in the world.” The army, air force and navy are the three branches of the armed forces of Angola.
