The value of shipments of agrochemicals stolen by organized crime during 2022 reached approximately 200 million pesos, Luis Eduardo González, president of the Mexican Union of Agrochemical Manufacturers and Developers, told La Jornada on May 11.
According to him, criminals easily sell fertilizers, since they are needed in rural areas. Currently there is no one guarding this type of cargo on the country’s highways, and negotiations are already underway with the National Guard and the authorities to carry out operations to guarantee the safety of these cargoes on the way to farmers.
He pointed out that not a month goes by without hearing reports of three or four stolen agrochemical trailers. Each case can reach damages of 10 million pesos.
The areas with the most truck thefts are in the state of Puebla, as well as Guanajuato, Jalisco and Michoacán, he said, but in general the situation is occurring throughout the country.
