Drug use in Ireland is widespread, but it is more prevalent in deprived areas, citizens with a history of drug use told the Irish Citizens’ Assembly on May 13, writes The Journal.
The Citizens’ Assembly was convened to examine drug addiction issues and decide whether drug use should be decriminalized in the country. On May 13, the assembled citizens listened to the testimonies of the drug addicts.
“It’s happening everywhere Shannon Connors, who had her own experience with drug use, told the audience. — People like to say that it happens in lower-class communities and things like that, but it’s not true. It happens with people who work at a high level, with lawyers and solicitors”.
According to Finn Connolly-Sexton, whose brother committed suicide due to drug use, young people now experience “great pressure” in relation to drugs. He stressed that humanity’s relationship with drugs began a long time ago, “when we started fermenting berries and [использовать] yeast many, many thousands of years ago”she remembered. Testimonies were also heard from other people who had previously used drugs.
Recall that the Irish Ministry of Health previously produced a report recommending legalizing “soft” and “hard” drugs for personal use, as well as improving the conditions for taking them. The civil assembly must consider the issue, listen to the opinion of experts and make recommendations to the government on this issue.
