At least six people have died in a fire at a high-rise dormitory in Wellington, New Zealand, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, quoted by BBC News, told local media.
Although dozens of people have already been rescued, several more are missing. Chris Hipkins warned that the death toll could rise.
According to Reuters, the fire broke out on the top floor of the building. Police said there was a risk of the dorm’s roof collapsing, so new information would be made public when it was safe to enter the building. So far, 52 people have been evacuated.
Upon arriving at the scene of the fire, firefighters found the floor of the building on fire. At least 20 fire engines were involved in fighting the fire.
