Culture Minister Adao e Silva defended the need to “ensure compatibility” of European press freedom laws with “the autonomy of national regulators” in Brussels on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Culture in Brussels this Tuesday, Pedro Adão e Silva mentioned that during the debate on the freedom of the media legislation, some Member States “stressed the importance of this regulatory instrument.”
But, he added, “some care must be taken in the discussion to ensure that this relationship tool is compatible with the autonomy of national regulators,” a discussion he considers “very important and also very sensitive.”
The minister mentioned that among the issues identified in the public consultations in Portugal is the autonomy of the media “in the face of economic power as well as in view of political power and with some of the tension that may exist between what is European regulation and the autonomy of national control bodies. “.
The legislative act, presented in October 2022 by the European Commission, is aimed at establishing uniform rules for the functioning of the internal media services market.
The focus is on protecting the freedom, pluralism and independence of the press in the EU.
