Property owners subject to additional municipal property tax (AIMI) must pay the tax by this Saturday.
The additional IMI, levied for the first time in 2017, is paid annually during September based on the value of tax assets (VPT) of buildings included in the matrices as of 1 January of the year to which the tax relates. .
AIMI is levied on the amount of VAT on city buildings (including building land), excluding city buildings classified as “commercial, industrial or service” and “other”. Properties that were exempt from IMI or were not subject to IMI in the previous year are also outside the scope of this tax.
According to available official data, AIMI revenues in 2022 amounted to 144.08 million euros, a slight decrease compared to the previous year (144.12 million euros) and the lowest since the tax began.
AIMI, which is aimed at companies and individuals, includes different rates for each of these types of taxpayers.
Under current rules, companies pay a tax of 0.4% on the entire asset value of urban housing and development land.
As for individuals, the tax includes three tax categories: a rate of 0.7% on the value of assets exceeding 600 thousand euros; another 1% if the value exceeds one million euros; and a third of 1.5% for amounts over two million euros.
Married couples and civil partners can double these tax-free amounts if they choose joint taxation.
AIMI is also payable for an undivided inheritance and can apply to the entire inheritance or to each heir’s share if they communicate this intention to the AT, a procedure that must be specified by the head of the couple and confirmed by all heirs annually.
Proceeds from additional IMI go to the Financial Stabilization Fund for Social Security (FEFSS).
