Last week, PSP seized a suitcase containing 30,000 doses of hashish at Ponta Delgada airport in the Azores, but no arrests were made, it emerged on Monday.
According to the PSP regional command, the arrest was carried out by police from the security unit of Ponta Delgada Airport on the island of São Miguel.
The drug was hidden inside a suitcase and authorities suspect it was left in the baggage claim area at Joao Paulo II airport in Ponta Delgada.
A PSP source told Lusa that the suitcase arrived on a flight departing from the mainland.
“The facts have been forwarded to the Department of Justice, which is responsible for leading the investigation,” the note released by PSP said.
In its statement, the Regional Command of the Azores emphasizes that the prevention and fight against drug trafficking “will continue to figure in the list of priorities for strategic police action” throughout the “Azores Autonomous Region, not only because it continues to be a relevant factor clearly linked with the commission of other crimes, but also due to the reduction and harmful effects it has on the health and well-being of users of these substances.”
