Two young men, aged 21 and 22, were arrested at the scene on Saturday for committing crimes against physical integrity, extortion, robbery and kidnapping.
According to a statement from the Public Security Police (PSP), the arrest occurred “following information gathering by police officers from the Lagos Police Station” who believed that the suspects were traveling in a car with two kidnapped persons.
The police force was mobilized and it was confirmed that the vehicle contained two citizens, “taken against their will and deprived of their liberty, who had already been attacked and forced to hand over large sums of money.”
Police recovered prohibited weapons and items stolen from several other victims.
After further investigations, both suspects were able to be charged with several counts of robbery, domestic theft, coercion and assault within the Lagos Municipality.
The detainees are suspected of targeting vulnerable targets, especially immigrants, causing a strong sense of insecurity among that community. Having been present at the first interrogation, they were placed in preventive detention.
