PSP improves road visibility for the safety of Fatima pilgrims

The Public Security Police (PSP) announced on Tuesday that it would increase its “presence and visibility on city roads, taking into account the increase in the number of pilgrims heading to the Fatima Sanctuary.”

“Until May 15, PSP provides police visibility and monitoring of pilgrims’ activities with the dual purpose of promoting safe coexistence between normal road traffic and pedestrian traffic of these groups,” the police statement said, adding that “roads commonly used by pilgrims will also (.. .) are especially aimed at controlling the speed of vehicles.”

On the other hand, the Public Security Police reports that “it has organized information sessions aimed at pilgrims, in which police officers discuss self-protection and road safety measures in the context of groups traveling on foot, with or without vehicle support.”

In addition to advising drivers on safe driving, the PSP also instructs pilgrims to wear light-colored clothing and reflective materials such as vests, and to walk on sidewalks or, in their absence, on the shoulders, to meet traffic and not occupy the roadway.

PSP also encourages pilgrims to use the so-called Caminos de Fatima whenever possible.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese Red Cross (CVP) announced that it has mobilized about one and a half hundred volunteers, stationed at 17 posts, fixed and mobile, to support pilgrims going to Fatima.

CVP teams are equipped to treat minor injuries as well as sudden illnesses, he adds, pointing out that in 2023 they supported 1,072 pilgrims during the May 12 and 13 pilgrimages.

“The 2024 operation involves 14 CVP delegations, with some accompanying pilgrims from their starting point to their arrival in Fatima. Others are in areas where the flow of people is much greater. Thus, the Red Cross will have permanent posts. in Águeda, Figueira da Foz, Marco de Canaveses, Oliveira de Azemeis, Ovar, Pombal and Santo Tirso,” the CVP said in a statement, adding that it will be present near the Fatima Sanctuary during the pilgrimage days with an advanced medical station and two first aid stations.

This year’s first international anniversary pilgrimage to the Cova da Iria sanctuary will be chaired by the Archbishop of Barcelona, ​​Cardinal Juan José Omella.

Pilgrimage ceremonies begin at 9:30 pm on Sunday with the recitation of the Rosary in the Chapel of Apparitions, followed by a procession of candles, celebrating the Word in the prayer area.

On Monday, after the night prayer vigil, at 09:00 the Rosary is recited in the Chapel of the Apparitions, followed by a procession, mass, blessing of the sick and farewell at the altar of the church premises. sanctuary.
