Drought worsens food prices and shortages may occur

Food prices are expected to rise as the drought worsens. The warning comes from the European Commission, which classifies the situation as “particularly serious” in Southern Europe, including Portugal, namely for farmers.

The same source adds that the drought could boost consumer prices. The position is shared by the president of the Confederation of Portuguese Farmers (CAP), Eduardo Oliveira i Souza.

“The prices of all products should be affected by the drought due to increased production costs and there could be shortages,” the CAP president said, adding that the situation in the south of the country is as serious as in Spain.

April was classified as an extremely dry month and was the third driest month since 1931. Within a month, the area with a lack of water in soils increased by 48%, while 89% of the mainland is arid. According to IPMA, 34% of this number occurs in a situation of severe and extreme drought.
