I must confess that I asteroid city called “Android City” several times because the word “Android” has become so common. Has this happened to you too?

(Everyone laughs.)
Jeffrey Wright: I didn’t fall into that trap.

Bryan Cranston: Several times I called the movie “Hemorrhoid City”. But this is a different film in a completely different genre. (laughs)

How did you come to the project? How does Wes Anderson actually choose his actors?

Adrien Brody: Working with Wes a few times, I got asteroid city just an email asking if I’m free. However, he did not give me the exact date. Only information that the Cannes Film Festival is in May and the film should be ready by that time. As Geoffrey can confirm, the first contact usually occurs at dinner.

Bryan Cranston: He just loves to bring people together. He is a very sociable and sensitive person.

Jeffrey Wright: Aside from the quality of the films, I would love to work with him again, mostly because of him as a person. After the first meeting, I thought first of all about one thing: “Wow, what a good guy.”

IN asteroid city It’s about a lot of different topics. Which of them stand out in your opinion?

Bryan Cranston: I think it’s a love letter to storytelling. If you look at the structure, this is a movie about a TV show considering a theatrical production. But these are also existential questions, such as whether there is another life in space, young love and loss. About questions to which you get answers, and questions to which you do not receive answers – everything is like in life.

There are beautiful wide shots in the film that make it almost impossible to put an X on the ground where you want the characters to stand – you would see the X in those shots. What did the very precise Wes Anderson do?

Adrien Brody: You will always find a way to find your place. You must use other things as a guide other than the “X” on the ground.

Bryan Cranston: Wes can tell if you’re even an inch wrong and correct you right away. He’s very specific about it and doesn’t move on to the next frame until he gets what he wants.

Jeffrey Wright: It gives us confidence as actors. Knowing that it’s perfect and that you haven’t screwed up anything that might annoy you later. You come together as a team.

Bryan Cranston: And don’t forget that you now have the technology to digitally remove floor markings.

But isn’t working with such a perfectionist exhausting?

Adrien Brody: We see it as more of a challenge. I like Wes’ accuracy. What many overlook, however, are the nuances of the emotional underpinnings of films, like children who have to deal with grief. However, he tells it with humor and all those precise visuals. I think it’s wonderful.

asteroid city opens June 15, 2023 in cinemas in Switzerland and Germany.
