A year on planet earth

From Plimsoll Productions A YEAR ON EARTH Episode 1 Winter December 2022 on ITVX Image: Stephen Fry Shooting in Iceland Stephen Fry presents a new historical animal series that explores how our annual journey around the sun affects nearly all life on Earth . As we orbit our star, we do so on a tilted axis of about 23.5 degrees, and this creates the seasons. For those who live in the northern hemisphere, winter brings low temperatures, dark days and periods of famine. On the frozen sea ice of Svalbard, a polar bear prepares her cub for a lonely life. Without food, she loses about a tenth of her weight every week. On the other side of the planet, it is southern summer, and the extreme south leans towards the sun, bringing warmth and light. Deep in the Southern Ocean, king penguins flock to Marion Island, a small strip of land between South Africa and Antarctica. This time of year is the breeding season and home to a million penguins. In the tropics, the intensity of the sun causes the formation of clouds that cause rain. It's play season for the African baby elephant, but even tougher times lie ahead. Stephen Fry presents a science documentary that shows how our planet changes as it revolves around the sun. It begins in winter, when the inhabitants of the northern hemisphere, including the polar bear and her cub, compete for food. It’s summer on the other side of the world, which means it’s breeding season for Marion Island penguins.
