The Wagata Christie defamation trial that swept across the country earlier this year is the subject of a new Channel 4 drama documentary.
It delves into the long-standing feud between Colin Rooney, wife of English footballer Wayne, and Rebecca Vardy, married to international star Jamie, and promises to take viewers straight to the heart of the court case.

What happened in Vardy v. Rooney?
The saga began when Coleen Rooney accused Rebecca Vardy of leaking “false stories” about her personal life to the media in October 2019 after she said she had undergone months of “collottal surgery” and some online detective work.

Hugh Tomlinson, QC acting on Vardy’s behalf, said Rooney “proved no evidence” that Vardy had “regularly and frequently abused” her trusted follower status on her personal Instagram account.
He said fighting libel was “a very easy thing” to “get conspiracy theories out of the way”.
In the end, Vardy did not win the libel case and was ordered to pay 90 per cent of Colin Rooney’s over £1.5 million legal fees.
In her ruling, Judge Stein described Vardy’s testimony in the defamation trial as “clearly inconsistent … evasive or implausible”, but Rooney’s testimony was “fair and reliable”.
The judge added: “I have learned that Ms. Vardy was involved in The Sun’s disclosure … Ms. Vardy was aware of, condoned, and actively participated in this conduct by sending Ms. Caroline Watt. [Vardy’s agent and friend] to a personal Instagram account by posting screenshots of Ms. Rooney’s posts, drawing attention to issues of potential press interest, and Ms. Watt by answering additional press questions.
