After its opening weekend, the second installment of the Avatar saga has already grossed $434 million worldwide. According to Disney, Switzerland contributed 2.9 million Swiss francs.
Since theatrical release last Wednesday Avatar: Path of Water over 150,000 tickets have already been sold in Switzerland. Strong value and certainly very satisfying for theaters that had their hopes set on a blockbuster of this size – and weren’t disappointed. Belonging avatarthe sequel had the best start to the current film year in Switzerland. It’s also the best start for a James Cameron film in this country.
Admittedly, these 150,000 are slightly less than the cost of 236,000. Avengers: Endgame reached three years ago. But there are a few factors to consider: First, the Avengers didn’t participate in the spectacular World Cup finals at the same time. Also, Marvel movies perform very well in their opening weekend, but drop off quickly in the weeks that follow. The main reason for this is the fear of spoilers, causing many to rush to watch a Marvel movie before stumbling upon the big reveal online.
This fear is not in the films of James Cameron. Instead, his films usually perform well for several weeks. For example, the first one played like this avatar only $77 million in the weekend after the US launch. In the end, it was $749 million in the US and $2.8 billion worldwide.
The fact that no film of comparable size will be released in theaters in the coming weeks also plays into the hands of The Way of Water. And let’s not forget that many people are still in pre-Christmas stress and then, probably, only have time for a 190-minute sci-fi epic between Christmas and New Year. how close Avatar: Path of Water will come with the first, so it should only become apparent at the beginning of the new year.
