Adaptation by Julia Donaldsons Smedy and Smoo bring family entertainment to BBC One this Christmas.
Donaldson, best known Gruffalo, stockman and Room on a broomstickreleased Smedy and Smoo in 2019.
The BBC synopsis for the animated adaptation reads: “Two young aliens from opposing families fall in love and run off, leading their relatives on a space chase.”
Essentially this Romeo and Juliet in space, but with a classic Donaldson twist and child-oriented.
Here’s when you can watch it for Christmas and who’s in the cast.
When are The Smeds and the Smoos?
Smedy and Smoo airs on BBC One at 2:30 p.m. on Christmas Day.
Reruns will air on Boxing Day at 9:00 am and Friday, December 30 at 1:35 pm, both on the same channel.
The half-hour special is also available on demand on BBC iPlayer.
Who is in the cast?
It tells the story of Sally Hawkins, who considers the role of Juliet one of her first stage roles. She is best known for starring in a Mike Leigh film. Lucky (2008), for which she received several awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Most recently, she appeared as Mrs. Brown in Paddington Films and in 2017 water shape.
The hapless lovers named Janet and Bill are voiced by Ashna Rabhera and Daniel Ezra.
You may know Rabhera from her role as Gwen. sex educationwhile Ezra is best known for playing Spencer James All Americans.
There are several big names among the cast, most notably Bill Bailey who plays Grandpa Smed and Rob Brydon who plays Uncle Smoo.
Speaking about his role, Bailey said, “Grandpa Smed, he’s kind of the patriarch of the Smed family, and he’s really kind of the protector of the family, and he’s in charge. And he’s kind of traditional and a little stuck in his ways. And he does get a little into dirt, but he’s good. He is not a boogeyman. He’s a good old grandpa who takes care of his family, I think that’s the best way to describe him.”
Granny Smoo is played by Ajoa Andoh, who has starred in two TV series. Doctor Who also like Francine Jones Bridgeton and accident.
Mira Sial, best known for her role as Sanjeev’s grandmother, Ummi. Kumars at number 42plays Aunt Smith.
