Pick of the day: Continuing in the same vein: the history of Viagra
A fascinating documentary shows how 25 years ago, trials of a drug that was supposed to relieve angina symptoms marked the beginning of what is being called the “second sexual revolution.” The first clinical trial of the Pfizer drug, then known as UK922480, began in Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales in 1992, and soon these human guinea pigs reported unexpected erections. These “negative” side effects led to the development of Viagra, the little blue pill that first hit the market in 1998. This has certainly thwarted previous attempts to cure male infertility, including transplanting testicles from monkeys into humans.
MasterChef: professionals
After last week’s impressive challenges, including a 50-course tasting menu in Copenhagen, the final round focuses on what the three finalists have learned over the past few weeks. As usual, the decision means the three remaining chefs have just three hours to prepare a homemade appetizer, main course and dessert to impress judges Monica Galetti, Marcus Wareing and Gregg Wallace.
Gardeners’ World Winter Specials
Wrap up the week with soothing notes from Monty Don as he shares tips for growing one of the stars of the holidays: amaryllis. Carol Klein, on the other hand, surrounds herself with flowers and scents in Kent as an advocate for witch hazel. And in South Yorkshire, Arith Anderson visits pioneering garden designer Nigel Dunnett to find out how the man responsible for transforming many public green spaces maintains his own garden.

Toy hospital
There’s no doubt that the nostalgia factor in this repair shop hybrid is aimed squarely at the boomer and Gen X crowd. This week, three cherished childhood treasures returned from the brink: Jester, the 1970s Chad Valley clown from Woolworths’ lifelong tormented by attachment; Rosebud, a 1950s breed doll who holds great meaning to her owner Mandy; and the once flamboyant BMX bike, a symbol of youthful exuberance but now a shadow of its former glory.
Two doors down
Ian’s old school friend Darren appears out of nowhere and brings back many memories – although Christina (Elaine S. Smith), who has a problem with mice, mistakes him for a man from Rentokil (“I set traps and put my frosts in Tupperware,” But when the neighbors As they investigate Ian and Darren’s relationship, Gordon (Kieran Hodgson) becomes paranoid.
Burt Bacharach: A Life in Song
The centerpiece of the evening, dedicated to Burt Bacharach, who died in February, was a unique concert held in 2015 at London’s Royal Festival Hall in honor of the songwriter and performer. Some of his best-known songs are performed by artists such as Alfie Boe, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Hayward, Michael Kiwanuka, Laura Mvula and Joss Stone. Bacharach himself will also appear and talk with Michael Grade about the art of songwriting and tell the stories behind some of his biggest hits.
Saturday
Pick of the Day: Doctor Who
Neil Patrick Harris guest stars as ’60s villain Toymaker, while Ncuti Gatwa makes his debut as the latest incarnation of the Time Lord in the last of these special episodes to celebrate the series’ 60th anniversary. If it’s as fun as the previous two, then the return of showrunner Russell T. Davies is sure to live up to the hopes of discerning Whovians. The episode remains largely mysterious, but we do know that “the giggling of the mysterious doll is driving humanity mad.” When the Doctor discovers the return of an old enemy, he faces a battle he can never win. Supporting Actress: Catherine Tate.
Come and dance strictly
Does the general British public object to the name Angela? Either way, Angela Scanlon and Angela Rippon quickly left. There was no elimination last weekend due to Nigel Harman’s injury, but after this week’s semi-final each pair will now be doing not one, but two routines.
Survivors
There is reportedly a lot of gnashing of teeth at Broadcasting House over this costly failure – with the BBC hoping the £30m reality show about tropical islands would repeat the success. Traitors. Anyway, back in the Dominican Republic, dire consequences arise for one player as the tribe tries to pick up the pieces of last night’s shaken Tribal Council while a mysterious object washes up on shore that could change the course of the game. Change for the castaways. And no, these are not the latest ratings.

Cher meets Raylan
An evening dedicated to Cher, ending with her 1987 film. Witches of Eastwickbegins with the singer and actress talking to Radio 2 presenter Rylan Clarke about her colorful life and career. Cher on BBC (10:00 p.m.) then shows many of her television appearances, including one from 1965. Top popularity An interpretation of “I Got You Babe”, recorded with ex-husband Sonny Bono.
Great White Christmas 1981.
More than forty years ago, Britain experienced the whitest Christmas of the 20th century, with more than half the country covered in snow. Featuring the usual celebrity appearances and “never-before-seen footage,” this documentary tells the story of this spectacular weather event. While children enjoyed sledding, snowball fights and building snowmen after school hours, adults found it difficult to find work and farmers’ livelihoods were destroyed. “It’s always been like this.”
Lockerbie
This stunning documentary about the 1988 attack on Pan Am Flight 103 and its aftermath continues with Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora was killed in the bombing, as he travels to Tripoli to meet Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi. Incredibly brave, Swire took a suitcase full of photographs of Flora to show the Libyan leader, but he was less successful in persuading Gaddafi to hand over the two suspects than international sanctions. But were they really the culprits?
Sunday
Pick of the Day: Vigil
In the sequel to the underwater police drama set on a nuclear submarine, DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and her pregnant colleague/lover Detective Inspector Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) investigate a massacre at a Scottish Air Force base. The cast includes Romola Garai and Dougray Scott and the film continues on Monday.
Planet Earth III
The latest installment in what may be Sir David Attenborough’s last groundbreaking wildlife series is called Heroes, in which the presenter pays tribute to the groups and individuals working to save endangered species. Surprisingly, frogs are among the most endangered species. “The sound of the frogs is dying down,” as Attenborough puts it, as he watches one man search for a mate for the world’s last known harlequin frog, Moron Santiago.

The Murder of Sherlock: Lucy Worsley on the Conan Doyle case
You may not know it from reading his Sherlock Holmes stories, but Arthur Conan Doyle barely knew London. While living in Portsmouth, he created his detective guide, Baker Street, and used a street map to learn about the capital. Lucy Worsley’s new series explores Conan Doyle’s relationship with his creation, but begins with the author’s first attempts to interest a publisher in his first Holmes novel. A study in Scarleta book he wrote in just one month in 1886.
