BBC’s Most Popular Drama of 2022 Tourist returns in early 2024 with several familiar faces and a completely new setting, very different from the first.
In the first season of the six-part thriller, Irish car crash victim Elliot Stanley, played by Jamie Dornan, battled amnesia and watched as his past gradually overtook his present.
The action takes place in the Australian outback. The hot, dry and dusty red landscape plays a key role in the atmosphere and plot of the series.
This time, writers and executive producers, brothers Harry and Jack Williams, chose a very different setting for Elliot’s backstory.
Where is the second season of The Tourist filmed?
The story moves from Australia to Ireland as Elliot tries to discover his roots with the help of his friend Helen, played by Danielle MacDonald.
Danielle was there with Jamie in season one, but as the focus shifts to the Emerald Isle, there are a lot of new faces popping up.
Filming took place primarily in Dublin, County Wicklow and the Wicklow Mountains.
Dornan said of the experience of filming in Ireland: “It’s amazing.
“The first day of filming we were in Kilpedder in Wicklow and I was walking through the trees and it started raining the hardest I’ve ever seen and I thought, this is what it’s like to film in Ireland.”
“I kind of forgot it’s been three or four years since I filmed here, but Ireland is beautiful.”
He said the fact that the series is set in Ireland gives him the opportunity to visit parts of Ireland he has never been to before. Dornan was born and raised in Northern Ireland.
He added: “We filmed mainly in Dublin and Wicklow, but we were able to go a little further afield and show what a beautiful place Ireland is.”
“It was great to work with the Irish team who had the same sense of humour.
“It was a dream to photograph here.”

Why was the film filmed in Ireland?
Tourist It was originally intended to be a standalone six-part series, but its success created demand for a second series.
The move to Ireland in season two was a deliberate change of scenery to give the new story a fresh feel.
Jack Williams, one of the writers and executive producers, said: “Visually the first series was very different – we, our director, loved the way it looked and felt. [Chris Sweeney] it went very well and although we obviously wanted her to have a lot in common with her, it’s a new country, it’s a new story.
“The Australian outback is very different from the very green and rainy country of Ireland.
“So we tried to take what we did in the first season and keep the cinematic feel, doing some big, sweeping landscape shots, and find a sensibility that would work for the second season.”
For Dornan, who also took on the role of executive producer for the season, being Irish was also an opportunity to spark interest in Ireland among many viewers.
“Having left Ireland 22 years ago and having traveled almost everywhere since then, I have discovered that there is a real intrigue with Ireland,” he said. “People are just fascinated by Ireland and I feel like everyone has some affection for the place and the people.

“I hope it’s a big draw. We’re showing Ireland on a big scale, with lots of Irish talent and some very funny Irish people.”
And the father-of-three admitted the fact the show was set to take place in Ireland rather than Australia meant he wouldn’t have to move his family for months at a time while filming.
He said: “Selfishly, it was good for me that I didn’t have to uproot my whole family again.”
