Hotel Portofino is about to appear on our screens and will surely take you to Italy in your thoughts.
The show is a historical drama about a British family who built a hotel for high society travelers on the magical Italian coast during the “roaring 1920s”.
It showcases the lush Italian Riviera in all its beauty. Here’s everything you need to know Hotel Portofino.
What can we expect from Portofino Hotel?
ITV reports: “The hotel has only been open for a few weeks, but for co-owner and driving force Bella Ainsworth, problems are already mounting: she lacks staff and money; her guests, including the overbearing Lady Latchmere, are demanding and difficult to please; and she becomes the target of the intriguing and corrupt local politician Signor Danioni, who threatens to draw her into the red-hot political cauldron of Mussolinian Italy.
“The hotel demands every resource, energy and focus from Bella, but she is pulled in other directions as she tries to restore her wounded son Lucian and widowed daughter Alice to health and happiness after the traumatic effects of World War I.
And then there’s Bella’s aristocratic but boorish husband Cecil, who is obsessed with the idea of a profitable marriage for Lucian to secure the future of the Ainsworth family estate in England and raise money for his amateurish lifestyle.
“Within a few weeks in the summer of 1926, Bella will find out how far he is willing to go to maintain his wealth and status. Located in the stunningly beautiful seaside town of Portofino, Hotel Portofino is a tale of personal awakening in a time of global upheaval and the liberating influence of Italy’s enchanting culture, climate and cuisine on Britain’s ‘innocents abroad’.
Where is the shooting?
Executive producer Walter Yuzzolino grew up in the area and knew Portofino’s look had to be authentic. But, of course, it is a very popular tourist destination among foreign and Italian travelers, so not everything can be filmed there.
Filming took place both on the Italian Riviera and on the Opatija Riviera in Croatia.
In Portofino itself, they used Piazza Martiri Dell’Olivetta, Portofino Lighthouse, Chiesa del Divo Martino and Castello Brown.
In Croatia, the Lungomare embankment was used, stretching along the coast from Lovran to Lovosko; more than 12 kilometers of coastline; Small port of Opatija; the city of Lovran; and Angiolina Park.
