The restored version of “Tasio” will inaugurate the Klasikoak section of Zinemaldia

The Basque Film Archive has restored the film in the spring of 2023 Tasio (Montxo Armendariz, 1984) in the L’immagine Ritrovata laboratories, dependent on the Bologna Cinematheque, and the result of these works can be seen at the Cannes festivals (May 14-25) and San Sebastián, where the version in 4K of the film will inaugurate the Klasikoak section of the 72nd edition of the festival 40 years after also premiering at Zinemaldia.

As explained by the Film Library, “the original material, preserved in the Spanish Film Library, was reviewed and repaired manually in Bologna, and cleaned with ultrasound. Once scanned, it was digitally restored, the image was stabilized, and scratches and dirt were removed. Finally, the color correction and sound restoration phase was undertaken, work that Armendariz himself supervised in the Italian city.”

Now, the French distributor Tamasa has bought the rights to Tasio to screen it in theaters in the French country in 2025.

Tasio

The film portrays the life of Tasio, a boy who lives in a small town in the mountains of Lokiz (Navarra); At eight years old he will start working in the mountains and at 14 he will be a charcoal burner, like his father. Although many residents migrate to the city to have a permanent job, Tasio prefers to maintain his freedom and live in the mountains. The film is based on the life of Anastasio Ochoa Ruiz (Tasio), a charcoal burner and poacher who was born in Zúñiga in 1916 and died in 1989 on Mount Valderrota.

The cast of the film was made up of Elías Querejeta (producer), Pablo G. del Amo (editor), Gerardo Vera (artistic director), Ángel Illarramendi (composer), José Luis Alcaine (director of photography), Alfredo Mayo (camera) and José Luis López-Linares (still photo). For their part, Patxi Bisquert and Amaia Lasa played the protagonists.
