The 81st edition ofThe Venice Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday with all the pomp and glamour of the world of cinema, and with the presence of world-renowned stars who will come to the city of canals to present their latest works.
The Mostra has taken its first steps with the screening, out of competition, of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuicethe sequel to Tim Burton’s popular horror comedy, which brings back Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder from the original cast and adds new signings such as Jenna Ortega and Monica Bellucci.
In the afternoon, the American actress Sigourney Weaver to receive Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the official opening ceremony.
Basque cinema will be represented by Framethe new movie by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garañowhich has the participation of EITB. It will be screened on Thursday, August 29, and will compete in the section Horizonsalong with 18 other lengths, including Quiet Life by Alexandros Avranas and My Inseparable by Anne-Sophie Bailly.
In the main section, 21 films will compete for the Golden Lionamong them The room next doorPedro Almodóvar’s first English-language film; Joker: Folly of Two by Todd Phillips; Queerdirected by Luca Guadagnino and starring Daniel Craig; Mariastarring Angelina Jolie and directed by Pablo Larraín; or I’m still here by Walter Salles.
Film lovers predict that La Mostra will be the stage for the big duel between Almodóvar and JokerThe director from La Mancha presents a melodrama about death and pain set in New York and starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, alongside John Turturro.
Joaquin Phoenix has returned to play the villain Joker under the direction of Todd Phillips, after having won the Oscar for this role. In this case, he will have Lady Gaga in the role of Harley Quinn. The first installment of Joker won the Golden Lion in 2019.
The Madrid filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen will also participate in the Official Section, but out of competition, with New Years.
Until September 7, the eyes of film lovers will be on the red carpet in Venice, where the main directors and actors of the seventh art will walk.
