Filmmaker Paco Plaza’s documentary “Mugaritz. Sin pan ni postre” will open the Culinary Zinema section of the 72nd edition of the San Sebastian Festival on Monday 23 September at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre.

In this documentary by Paco Plaza, the viewer will witness the process of reinvention that takes place in Andoni Luis Aduriz’s restaurant during the six months it was closed. The film tells the story of a Japanese chef, a lover of French cuisine, who opens a restaurant in Paris and struggles to get his third Michelin star.

There are a total of five films that will make up the Culinary Zinema section. Four of them will compete for the award, and one of them will participate out of competition. ‘Mugaritz. Sin pan ni postre’, by Paco Plaza; ‘Grand Maison Paris’, by the Japanese Ayuko Tsukahara; ‘Kita no syokukei / Northern Food Story’, by the Japanese Tetsuya Uesugi; and ‘Shelf Life’, by Ian Cheney will compete for the award, while ‘El hoyo 2’ by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia will be shown out of competition.

The winning film will take home the Culinary Zinema Prize of 10,000 euros.

In addition, Culinary Zinema will host five themed dinners related to the screenings.

In the case of the Mugaritz film, the dinner will be prepared by Miguel Caño (Nublo), Juan Vargas (Muka), Alatz Bilbao (Bakea), Fran Baixas (Franca) and Carlos Salvador (Amaica), chefs who have worked at the restaurant and who will use produce from the garden of Leire Etxaide, who coordinates the Huerta BCC project.
