Sophie RundleLord Jack, Peaky Blinders) takes on the role of British diplomat Laura Simmonds.
Additional cast members joining the series include Danny Sapani (Kill Eve, mother, father, son) as Colin Sutherland, Steve Cree (Discovery of witches, Outlander) as Sam Henderson and Serena Mantega (Mrs Wilson) as Alba Ortiz.
Isaac Ferris (ur.Libertad, giants) resigns as Inspector Castells and Laia Costa (soulmates, devil) as Mariana Cabell.
What is it about?
Diplomat follows Laura Simmonds (Sophie Rundle), the British Consul in Barcelona, who is forced to become the de facto agent, consultant and lawyer as she helps holidaymakers through various hardships.
The series begins with the mysterious death of a young British bartender working on a yacht in Barcelona’s infamous harbor.
While the Spanish police believe the death was a tragic accident, Laura supports the boy’s grieving father, Colin (Sapani), who is convinced something even more sinister happened that night.
As more evidence emerges and the investigation into the murder begins, Laura and Alba find a connection between the bartender’s death, organized crime, and British security services.
Laura’s quest for justice puts her in real danger as she threatens to expose the secrets that the British and Spanish will zealously keep.
Opposing, Sophie Rundle said, “One of the things I really liked about Laura was her competence,” says Rundle.
“She’s not here for privilege. She’s not there because of favoritism. She paved her way. It’s very nice to see it in the main character that a woman in such a high position is not an anomaly.
“It’s like, ‘Yes, she’s right.'”
When does it start?
Diplomat will air on Tuesday, February 28 at 21:00 on Alibi. Subsequent five-hour episodes will be shown in the same slot.
