In 2007, Disney surprised us with Enchanted and the story of a fairytale princess looking for love in New York. Now comes the sequel to Disenchanted, and we sat down with the stars.
It’s been fifteen years since Disney has been with us. enchanted charmed. Amy Adams traveled from her fairyland to New York as a (originally animated) fairy tale princess to find the love of her life. Now Adams has her role in disappointed resumes and shows what can happen after the “happy ending”.
disappointed Releases November 18, 2022 exclusively on the Disney+ streaming channel. In anticipation of this, the cast, including the director, met with reporters and answered a few questions. Among others there were Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, Maya Rudolph and director Adam Shankman. Of course, we were also there to tell us what the storytellers gave us along the way.
Out now: Barry, was it difficult to create a new story based on an already known one?
Barry Josephson (Producer): It all started when Amy Adams really wanted to play Gisele again. Then Adam (Shankman, director) came along and took the script to the next level. We were working on history; The comedy, drama, and musical numbers were streamlined, resulting in a film based on existing characters, yet still telling a new and fresh story.
Adam Shenkman (Director): We were sitting with responsible people at Disney, and suddenly the idea of a stepmother came up. Giselle is one of those, she has a stepdaughter who doesn’t believe in magic. But like I said, it all started with Amy and Giselle. I have wanted to work with her for a long time. We are friends, we speak the same language, we love Disney movies and we love musicals. We also wanted to make a film “for” Amy, and I think we succeeded.
Out now: Alan, how do you get started writing music for a film like this? When writing songs, do you already know who can sing what?
Alan Menken (composer): We write music for the characters and the story. If the actors fit, so much the better. In the first part of the series, the score grew along with the main character, now we had to go back a little to find her groove again. However, at the latest, when the wish has been expressed, the music changes again and brings us back to the great world.
Out now: Was returning to heroes easy or difficult?
Amy Adams (Giselle): We checked where Giselle was when we left her. We wanted to continue her development from the first film, but she needed to be firmly on her feet and not lose her naivety and cheerfulness. Everything I love about this character had to continue to matter. And then the cast came along, and it worked out great. I can’t thank everyone enough for being in this movie. It was nice.
Idina Menzel (Nancy): My role has changed a lot. From the cynical bitch from New York to the current version. Finding a balance between these two opposites was not easy, but endlessly fun.
Patrick Dempsey (Robert): My character is relatively simple in the beginning. But then it becomes “larger than life” and I was able to discover new corners that I didn’t know about before. I was finally able to sing, work with a coach and soak up a lot of filming in Ireland. An extraordinary experience to immerse yourself in this fabulous world again.
Adam Shankman (director): And it was fun to see you in a suit and a skirt. That’s what people want!
out nowQ: How was the shooting for the new actors?
Maya Rudolph (Malvina Monroe): I was finally allowed to sing in the film. I felt like I had been waiting my whole life for this opportunity. Singing and dancing lessons were a dream that finally came true. Now I can mark it as “done” in my head. Little Maya always dreamed of something like this.
Gabriella Baldacchino (Morgan): I had a great experience, meeting all these people who changed my life. Singing these songs written by famous musicians is incredible. I learned a lot and could always ask colleagues for advice.
Adam Shankman (director): The casting was a dream come true and we knew from the very beginning of filming that we needed these talents for the roles. And we had to endure filming at a difficult time. This was in the “pre-vaccination era” and we had to live in a bubble. But there is nothing better than going through this adventure with such a group.
Out now: You filmed in Ireland. Do you have good memories?
Maya Rudolph (Malvina Monroe): We learned a lot about butter and dairy, it changed our lives… (Everyone laughs.) I was there with my family and we learned a lot. The crew was wonderful, the locals took us in right away and we made lifelong friends there. A small world was created for us, which we thoroughly enjoyed. At that time we were allowed to leave the country, and we could not have done it better.
Patrick Dempsey (Robert): I was allowed to live in the north of Ireland for 14 days and I could absolutely enjoy peace and solitude. I learned a lot about the history of music, of course, about butter and bread and the people who live there. A great opportunity to get to know and get to know the country and its people. Dublin was isolated and we could enjoy everything outside. Even cold and rain. I was in my element there.

Oscar Nunez (Edgar): Right, Adam Shankman approached me, and I really liked the cast, so I immediately agreed. Amy always sang on set when she wasn’t filming, and our families got closer too. I really enjoyed it and it shows how much love and friendship there was on set. But actually I shot a lot more scenes, including a great dance number, but they were cut. Otherwise, I probably would have taken on the film.
Adam Shankman (director): Now we need these scenes for the spin-off. But do people really want to see it?
Out now: Adam, this movie is full of easter eggs. can you tell us something about it
Adam Shankman (director): I believe this is the first time Disney has allowed a movie to make fun of Disney classics and movies. We implemented this so that, for example, the clothes in the film look like in classic cartoons. Or the stores have a lot of Disney in their logos. But of course, it has a lot of things that fans will learn over time.
Alan Menken (composer): We have connections everywhere. If you listen carefully to the songs, you will notice melodies, words and sequences that you know from somewhere. Just prick up your ears!
Out now: Amy, enchanted will soon celebrate its 15th anniversary. How do you remember the film?
Amy Adams (Giselle): I liked Gisele and her motivation from the very beginning, but we were not sure that the audience would see it that way. I remember a performance in London, where the hall was just quiet. The energy worked on the audience gradually and eventually became overwhelming. And this film came at the very beginning of my career, so of course it means even more to me. Gisele never left me, and at the meeting with Disney, she immediately returned and gushed out of me.
Out now: Adam, what does “happily ever after” mean to you?
Adam Shankman (director): Of course, what people feel when they watch this film. But also the love and friendship that I have for family and friends. Including here. If you can live your life like this, then you have a “happily ever after.”
