emancipation tells the story of Peter (Will Smith), a man who breaks free from slavery. Guided by his sharp mind and unwavering faith and deep love for his family, he must confront the cold-blooded slave hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana in his quest for freedom.
The film is inspired by the 1863 photographs of Whipped Peter taken during a Union Army medical examination during the Civil War and first published in Harper’s Weekly. The photograph, known as “Wounded Back”, which showed Peter’s back scarred from the flogging of his tormentors, eventually contributed to the growing public opposition to slavery.
