António Costa’s name was searched in emails seized by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) at the Lisbon Chamber as part of the “Operação Tutti Frutti”: António Luis Santos Costa’s name was found in emails seized from Fernando Medina by the former president of the municipality and current finance minister, Duarte Cordeiro, former councilor and current minister of the environment, and Manuel Salgado, former urban councilor in the municipality.
The name of the current prime minister was one of 97 keywords used by investigators from the Parliament and Judicial Police (PJ) in an email seized from Medina, Cordeiro and Salgado, TVI reported this Wednesday, as part of Operation Tutti Frutti. Costa was president of the municipality until April 5, 2015, when Medina succeeded him. The defense of Medina, Cordeiro and Salgado filed several appeals to invalidate the evidence gathered by the investigators. In this investigation, the MP, who cooperates with the SP, investigates suspicious cases of the municipality and joint cases with several companies.
The emails contained relevant information about the Torre de Picoas licensing process. The owner of the land gave BES a mortgage loan of 15 million euros. Having no funds to pay off the mortgage, he gave the land to BES for one euro. The autarchy rejected the land owner’s subsequent projects, but when he handed over the property to BES, the municipality’s new master plan had already been approved. This information will be hidden from the owner. The MP is investigating alleged crimes of evasion of duty and abuse of power.
